ロナルド・H・コース（Ronald H. Coase、1910年12月29日 - 2013年9月2日）は、イギリス生まれのアメリカの経済学者。1991年にノーベル経済学賞を受けた。

1910年12月29日、ロンドンのミドルセックス・ウィルズデンで生まれた。コースは足が不自由で少年時代は特別学校に通っていたが、息子の将来を考えあぐねた両親は骨相学者の見立てを伺ったところ、「知的な職業」を進められ、奨学金により中等学校に進むことができたという。コースの父親は高等教育を受けていない電気技師であったが、当時ロンドン大学は労働者階級の子弟にも広く門戸を開いていたため、通信教育聴講生として進学することができた。ロンドン大学入学当初、コースは歴史学を専攻しようとしたが、（当時英国の教養として常識であった）ラテン語の教育を受けていなかったために、歴史学専攻を許されなかった。歴史学への道を諦めたコースは化学を専攻しようとしたが、数学の成績があまりに悪かったため、化学専攻も諦めざるを得なかったという。

1932年に産業論の研究でロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクス（LSE）を卒業した後、スコットランドのダンディー・スクール・オブ・エコノミクス（1932-1934年）、リヴァプール大学（1934-1935年）、LSE（1935-1951年）で教鞭をとり、第二次世界大戦中はイギリス政府の軍務に就いた。軍務では統計業務に携わっていたが、シカゴ大学時代の同僚リチャード・エプスタインは「あいつは生まれてから数字を見たことがない」と語り、数学が苦手なコースが統計の仕事をしていたことに驚いたという。1951年にLSEから博士号を取得した後、ロックフェラー財団の奨学金により渡米し、バッファロー大学（1951-1958年）、バージニア大学（1958-1964年）の教授職を経て、1964年にシカゴ大学に移籍した。シカゴ大学移籍を機に学術誌Journal of Law and Economics の編集者となり、「法と経済学」の発展に尽力した。1979年にシカゴ大学経済学部教授を退職した後は1982年まで編集者の職に専念した。また、名誉職として、アメリカ経済学会ディスティングッシュド・フェロー、シカゴ大学ロースクールシニア・フェロー、クリントン・R・ミュッサー名誉教授、アメリカ芸術科学アカデミーフェロー、ブリティッシュ・アカデミーフェローとなる。1991年にはノーベル経済学賞を受賞した。2013年9月2日、シカゴで死去。102歳没。

業績

The Nature of the Firm(「企業の本質」、1937年)とThe Problem of Social Cost(「社会的費用の問題」、1960年)の二つの業績により、1991年にノーベル経済学賞を受賞した。これら二つの論文はいずれも大著ではなく、執筆している論文の数自体も多くはなかったが、それまで経済学において議論されてこなかった「権利」や「法」による外部性の分析、「取引コスト」概念による企業存在の基礎付けというユニークな業績を認められての受賞であった。

The Nature of the Firmでは、分業を通じた「市場と企業の境界」に言及し、The Problem of Social Costにおいて彼が発見したメカニズムは「コースの定理」として知られている。

Durability and Monopoly(「耐久性と独占」、1972年)は耐久消費財市場における独占企業の市場支配力の問題を扱ったものだが、そこでのコースの主張は、「コースの推論」と呼ばれ、その厳密な証明の展開など、産業組織論の多くの理論家たちの関心を集めた。

業績に対する誤解

「社会的費用の問題」（1960年）で提起された「コースの定理」は「一部に大きな誤解を生んでいる」ことでも有名である。「コースの定理」は標準的な教科書においては「企業間に外部性が存在しても、もし取引費用がなければ、資源配分は損害賠償に関する法的制度によって変化することはなく、また常に効率的なものが実現する」や「外部性の出し手と受け手との間で交渉が行われれば、それが理想的な形で機能する限り、授権のあり方に関わらず、常にパレート効率的な資源配分を実現する」と要約されるが、一方で、定理を正しく理解していない経済学者からはしばしば「政府の介入を極力嫌い、自由放任の市場競争を良しとするシカゴ学派の思想に基づくもの」等と誤解される。しかし、コース自身、「これらの洞察は取引費用がプラスの現実世界の分析に向けてのステップとして以外には価値が無い。（中略）取引費用ゼロの世界の詳細の研究に多くを費やすべきではない」と述べており、この「コースの定理」は「経済システムを構成する諸制度のあり方の決定において、取引費用が果たす、あるいは果たすべき基本的な役割を、明らかにすること」を目的としたアイデアであって、決して市場の万能性を主張しているのではなく、「取引費用が無視できない現実的な世界では、なぜ非効率性が発生し、市場メカニズムがうまく機能しないようなケースが起こるのかを解明しようとした」のであった。なお、「コースの定理」の命名者はシカゴ学派の代表的経済学者と知られるジョージ・スティグラーであった。
